Observatory update · Madegoua civilian killings
Later reporting raised the death toll from the 17 September attack on Madegoua, near Makary in Cameroon’s Far North, to at least 15 civilians. Early reports put the toll at 13; a local vigilante told Reuters that two injured victims later died in hospital.
Witness accounts said armed men entered the village at about 2 a.m., pulled men from their homes, tied them up and killed them. Responsibility remains uncertain. No armed group had claimed the attack when Reuters reported it. A security analyst assessed that Islamic State West Africa Province was likely responsible, while other early reports described the attackers as Boko Haram militants. This record therefore uses suspected Islamist militants rather than treating either attribution as established fact.
Motive is also unresolved. Villagers cited an earlier militant demand that residents leave the area; other reporting raised the possibility of reprisal after ammunition intended for militants was seized. Neither explanation has been conclusively established. What is established is that civilians were deliberately killed in their homes in a region that has endured years of armed violence.
This is recorded as conflict and civilian-protection context, not as an additional GBV case. It does not change the September GBV totals above.
Observatory update · 27 September 2026
New MINPROFF figures put reported GBV cases at 4,883 in the first half of 2026.
New figures attributed to Cameroon’s Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family give a clearer national picture of reported gender-based violence during the first half of 2026.
According to statistics compiled through MINPROFF’s regional delegations, 4,883 GBV cases were reported between January and June 2026. The Far North recorded 1,828 cases, followed by the South West with 980 and the North West with 451. Centre recorded 423; South 346; Littoral 264; North 209; East 174; West 122; and Adamawa 106.
The regional distribution matters. The Far North, North West and South West together account for 3,259 of the 4,883 reported cases—roughly two-thirds of the total. All three regions are affected by prolonged insecurity or conflict. That association deserves attention, but the figures alone do not establish that conflict caused each recorded case. They include GBV occurring in different circumstances, including intimate-partner and domestic violence.
The numbers should also not be described as the number of GBV incidents that occurred in Cameroon. They are reported and registered cases. Under-reporting remains an important limitation, and the figures do not establish the full prevalence of GBV nationally.
A second figure requires particular care. CRTV reported on 27 September that MINPROFF data show more than 73 reported femicide cases between January and September 2026. The Observatory is not using that figure to alter its Cameroon fatal-case tracker. The published report does not provide the individual cases, dates, methodology or enough information to determine whether every case meets this register’s inclusion rules. It is retained here only as national context pending case-level verification.
The significance of the new data is therefore not that it supplies a complete national GBV count. It provides a recent government-reported snapshot of where registered cases are concentrated and gives the Observatory a benchmark against which later official figures can be compared.
