Cameroon · case-linked public register · from August 2026

Documenting lives lost. Tracking patterns. Strengthening accountability.

An open-source, case-linked monitor of reported fatal gender-based violence, with a separate privacy-safe register of serious non-fatal incidents.

Research and editorial lead: Killian Tubuo Nkwain · Case review: 12 September 2026

14 reported fatal GBV deaths · 1 reported non-fatal incident

Coverage: 1 August to 12 September 2026. Each count is derived from an individually traceable record in this non-exhaustive public register. These are not Cameroon’s national totals; September is still in progress. “Reported” means a sourced account, not a court finding. An empty non-fatal cell means no qualifying incident indexed here, not zero violence.

Coverage note: This is the current non-exhaustive case-linked register, not an estimate of all murders, all femicides, or all GBV in Cameroon. Earlier months are outside this publication series and are not represented as zero. The tracker will add subsequent months and can revise August or September when stronger evidence appears.

Reported victim and suspect gender

Of the 14 indexed fatal victims, 13 are described as women and one as a girl. The following percentages use all 14 indexed deaths as the denominator; a suspect is an alleged person, not someone found guilty. Unknown is retained as its own category.

Reported pairing in fatal casesDeathsShare of all 14 indexed deaths
Man accused → woman or girl1392.9%
Woman accused → man or boy00.0%
Accused person’s gender not established → woman17.1%

Reading the percentage: The 13 man-to-woman/girl allegations are 92.9% of all 14 fatal records, or 13 of 13 (100%) where the accused person’s gender is reported. No woman-to-man/boy case has yet entered this non-exhaustive fatal register. That zero is not evidence that women never harm men or that the national rate is zero. One fatal record has no established accused gender.

Non-fatal incident, counted separately: One woman is reported injured by her husband, a man: 1 of 1 indexed serious non-fatal incidents (100%). One report is too small for a meaningful population comparison. The incident is not added to the 14 deaths.

Monthly fatal pairing: August: 10 reported man → woman/girl, one accused gender unknown (11 deaths). September through 12 September: three reported man → woman (three deaths). These are descriptive case-register counts, not a change in national prevalence.

Non-fatal incident watch

Living survivors are not named. A non-fatal incident appears here only when a specific reported event can be represented safely. No incident in this release is a national measure of reporting frequency.

What these cases can show

Several of the indexed deaths involve an alleged current or former partner; others involve reports of sexual violence. Every fatal victim currently listed is a woman or girl because of who has been identified in this non-exhaustive public-source register. The gender breakdown is descriptive of this register, not a representative measure of violence in Cameroon. Search for men and boys harmed by GBV, female suspects and other under-reported patterns in every review. Missing information on prior complaints, protection and court outcomes must remain marked unknown.

Questions for action: Were prior threats or help requests recorded? How long did investigations take to reach arrest, charge and trial? Which referral or protection services were accessible? Can ministries publish disaggregated, de-identified monthly figures with clear definitions? Human Rights Watch, 24 June assessment

Methodology and limits

  • Public period: deaths and distinct serious non-fatal incidents in Cameroon from 1 August 2026 onward. The public register starts in August; earlier months are neither displayed nor treated as zero.
  • Fatal inclusion: a reported death plus case-level evidence of an intimate-partner or other gender-related nexus. A female homicide on its own is not automatically a femicide.
  • Non-fatal inclusion: distinct serious GBV events with safe case-level reporting. A survivor injured in a fatal event does not create an extra count.
  • Evidence labels: “Reported” requires an identifiable credible source; “Corroborated” requires genuinely independent confirmation. Under-review leads do not enter the headline. Official claims, media reports and judicial findings remain distinct.
  • Gender fields and denominator: “Victim gender” and “reported suspect gender” reproduce a source’s description (woman, girl, man, boy or unknown); they are not guesses from a name or image or claims about a person’s self-identified gender. An accused person is not a convicted perpetrator. Report both a percentage of all indexed records (including unknown) and the known-pair subset; do not treat either as national prevalence. Count fatalities as people and non-fatal incidents as distinct events in separate tables.
  • Dates and counting: one death per person; one non-fatal incident per distinct event. Assign by death or incident month where known, or visibly label a discovery or approximate date. Corrected dates may move an entry without creating a new death.
  • Deduplication and corrections: compare aliases, place, date, relationship and investigative details. Retain stable IDs and publicly explain material corrections to names, dates, classification or totals.
  • Safety and limits: do not republish graphic images, private survivor information or exact addresses. Reporting varies across regions, and the absence of a case from this register is not evidence that no violence occurred.

Leads outside the headline count

These cases require more evidence about the cause of death or gender-related nexus. They are not included in the 14 fatal deaths.

August · Kenfack Fortune and Valeryn N.: Both deaths are reported or suspected killings; the public record does not yet establish a gender-related factor. MMI News, 11 September review

August · Tibati–Meiganga woman and Tina Tabi: Potential sexual violence and disputed cause of death respectively remain under investigation; neither enters the principal GBV death total. MMI News, 11 September review

September · Chea Géraldine: Her husband was reportedly arrested and injuries were reported, but the cause and gender-related circumstances of death still require forensic confirmation. MMI News, 11 September review

Corrections and scope changes

12 September 2026 · Gender fields added: 14 fatal victim genders described as 13 women and one girl. In 13 fatal cases the reported accused is described as a man; one accused gender remains unknown. The one separately indexed non-fatal incident describes a woman injured by her husband. No fatal or non-fatal event has been added or reclassified by this metadata update.

12 September 2026 · Public scope reset: the monthly publication series begins 1 August 2026. The earlier, incomplete January–July cells and case cards are removed from this page. The new August–September baseline is 14 reported fatal deaths and one reported non-fatal incident. Earlier research is kept off this public monthly series; absence from it never means the earlier deaths did not occur.

Material case corrections retained: Diane Yidi Ebabi’s name and age were corrected after the gendarmerie account; Irène Dorothée Ngo’s different reported locations describe one death; Bronhilda Nofendo’s death date was corrected to 19 August; Modestine Maffo’s exact August day remains disputed; the suspect in Eyenga Konga Jamelle’s case survived, contrary to early reports.
