Senegal | Labour rights and civic space | 20 October 2026
Trade unions in Senegal have announced a three-day strike for 21–23 October over employment conditions, pensions, the cost of living and government commitments to workers. Their coalition, the Front syndical pour la défense du travail, says earlier demands have not been adequately addressed.
The dispute includes concerns about rules allowing fixed-term employment contracts to last up to four years. Union representatives argue that the arrangement could leave workers without secure employment for too long.
On 20 October, the Labour Ministry questioned whether the announced action met legal notice requirements. This is the government’s stated position, not a court judgment on the strike’s legality.
As of this report, the announced strike had not begun. It would be inaccurate to describe the three days of industrial action as already completed. The right to organise peacefully, the government’s duty to protect essential services and the possibility of negotiations all matter.
