Among the eight deaths with an identified alleged actor, six are male-against-female allegations (75%) and two female-against-male allegations (25%). Bundi’s suspected killing remains in the unresolved-pairing group: a man being sought does not establish that he killed her. These fractions describe this incomplete register, not national perpetration. The three non-fatal events involve one girl, one two-child event whose survivor genders were not published, and one boy linked to the 25 September household fatalities; all three events have reported male actors.

Citizen Digital interviewed neighbours and his brother and reported a police arrest after an alleged fatal stabbing at the couple’s Rongai home. Reported earlier quarrels came from neighbours, not verified police complaints.
Justice: Chebet arrested, later court outcome not established. Limits: The exact death hour near midnight is unknown; guilt is not adjudicated.

Police told The Star Owino was allegedly injured by her husband in Ugunja and died while receiving treatment. Unrelated deaths in that news story have no GBV nexus.

Mercy Kananu Bundi, 33 · KE-GBV-2026-003

Bundi’s sister found her unresponsive at home. Police described injuries and marks around her neck and sought her husband. An earlier local account gives 10 August as the discovery date. This is a provisional suspected partner-killing classification.
Justice: Police manhunt reported; autopsy and later court result unavailable. Limits: Husband’s absence does not prove guilt. A contrary autopsy requires reclassification and revised totals.

Citizen Digital interviewed family and reported that police discovered Kirika’s body after Chege reportedly told officers he had killed his wife. Investigators documented injuries; a postmortem had not yet established the cause.
Justice: Chege hospitalized under police guard as of 5 September; trial outcome unknown. Limits: An alleged statement is not guilt proved. If the death was in August, retain the same ID and move its month with a correction.

Police responded to an injured child on 6 September. She died after being taken to hospital. DCI reported preliminary signs of sexual assault and arrested her father. Her death is one fatal record, not a second non-fatal rape event.

What the case register supports
Four dated or discovery-dated fatal victims are indexed in August (two women, two men); two female victims, including a child, are indexed in early September. Two August non-fatal incidents involve children. This small, unequally reported set cannot demonstrate an underlying trend, county hot spot or national male/female distribution.
Questions for policymakers: Did any agency record prior requests for protection in the partner cases? Can child protection, care and justice referrals be followed without identifying survivors? Can courts publish privacy-safe stages from arrest through judgment? What does access to protection and specialist care look like outside Nairobi? These remain questions, not established institutional failures in any particular case.
Policy context and survivor support
The Kenyan Directorate of Gender-Based Violence Mitigation describes its role in GBV monitoring and protection facilities. UN Women’s July 2026 partnership report provides policy context, not incident totals. The Protection Against Domestic Violence Act, 2015 is a relevant legal framework. National helpline 1195 provides a referral route for people seeking help; it does not establish whether an indexed victim accessed services.

Wrong-month safeguards: Maureen Atieno Oloo was reported on 1 August but killed on Thursday 30 July; Jedida Mwende was discussed in August but killed in July; and the Eldoret hospital assault was reported in August but occurred 21 July. None is included. The Kisauni September arrest is an update to the August incident.
Methodology and safeguarding
Start 1 August 2026. Count a distinct GBV-related fatal person once, and a distinct serious non-fatal event once. Use the incident date; use an explicitly dated discovery as a temporary death-date proxy and label it. A news publication, arrest or court date alone never determines the month. Uncertain leads stay outside totals. Deduplicate outlet rewrites and match names, ages, locations and dates before assigning stable IDs.
“Reported” means an original, traceable police or newsroom account, not guilt established. Preserve police, family and witness attribution. Remove and visibly correct any case disproved by better evidence. Withhold child identities and images, living sexual-assault survivors’ names, precise addresses and private medical details.
