Nigeria GBV Tracker
Documenting lives lost, serious non-fatal incidents and the public record of institutional response.
3 reported fatal GBV deaths · 2 reported non-fatal incidents
Indexed period: 1 August–12 September 2026; reviewed 12 September 2026. These five records are included in an initial non-exhaustive register; they are not Nigerian national totals. August is a closed calendar month whose indexed count may still be revised. September is in progress. Allegations are not court findings.

| Month · open archive | Fatal deaths · people | Non-fatal · incidents | Cumulative fatal since August | Cumulative non-fatal since August |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| August 2026 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| September 2026 · through 12 Sep | 1 | 0 indexed so far | 3 | 2 |
The incident or death date determines the month. In NG-GBV-2026-002, police were notified at about 2 a.m. on 31 August, attended the scene and removed the deceased. Because the assault and death time remain unknown, August is retained provisionally by the documented 31 August recovery—not by the 3–4 September publication dates. A zero indexed in September’s non-fatal column means none entered in this register, not none occurred in Nigeria.
Reported victim and accused gender
| Alleged fatal-case pairing | Indexed deaths | Share of these 3 indexed deaths |
|---|---|---|
| Man accused → woman | 2 | 66.7% |
| Woman accused → man | 1 | 33.3% |
| Gender of accused unknown | 0 | 0.0% |
Among the two separate non-fatal incidents listed here, a girl and a woman are the reported survivors and men are the reported suspects. Those two incidents are not added to the fatal denominator. Three deaths are far too few to estimate the gender distribution of violence in Nigeria or compare it with another country.

Innocent Nwaoji · NG-GBV-2026-001
When: 8 August 2026 · Where: Obingwa, Abia · Record: Fatal — intimate partner · Victim/survivor gender: Man · Reported accused gender: Woman
Evidence: Reported; police statement quoted in press · Justice: Wife reportedly arrested; investigation ongoing when reported
PUNCH quoted Abia State Police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka as saying that Sara Innocent allegedly stabbed her husband, Innocent Nwaoji, on 8 August in Obingwa. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead. Police reported her arrest and an ongoing investigation. The allegation establishes neither motive nor guilt; no subsequent charge or judgment was found in the material reviewed for this release.
What remains uncertain: The incident date comes from the police statement quoted by PUNCH. Do not confuse this August killing with another widely circulated Abia husband-killing reported in February 2026.

Odukoya Adenike · NG-GBV-2026-002
When: Body recovered by police on 31 August 2026; assault/death time not established · Where: Ibogun Akinode, Ogun · Record: Fatal — intimate partner · Victim/survivor gender: Woman · Reported accused gender: Man
Evidence: Reported; police sources quoted in press · Justice: Husband reportedly died in separate road accident; police investigation reported
The Guardian reported that Adenike died after an alleged assault during an argument with her husband, Odukoya Bidemi, in Ibogun Akinode. The case was reported to police at around 2 a.m. on 31 August. The paper said investigators later identified Bidemi as the person killed in a road accident while reportedly fleeing. His road-accident death is a separate event and is not added to this GBV fatality count.
What remains uncertain: The paper does not establish the exact moment of injury or death. Its 3 and 4 September articles share a newsroom and should not be treated as two independent confirmations.

Bauchi child · identity withheld · NG-NF-2026-001
When: Around 23–24 August 2026; date conflict in source · Where: Bauchi State · Record: Non-fatal — alleged child sexual violence · Victim/survivor gender: Girl · Reported accused gender: Man
Evidence: Reported; police statement quoted in press · Justice: Suspect reportedly arrested; investigation ongoing when reported
Channels Television reported that Bauchi Police arrested a 70-year-old man following an allegation of sexual violence against an child. The family reported the alleged incident to police on 26 August. Police said the child received medical care and that the matter remained under investigation. The survivor’s name and more precise location are withheld.
What remains uncertain: The story calls the alleged incident 'Sunday, August 24', but 24 August 2026 was a Monday. The exact day (23 or 24) needs clarification from police; either places the incident in August. The machine-readable date 24 August is provisional.

Ogun adult survivor · identity withheld · NG-NF-2026-002
When: 30 August 2026 · Where: Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun · Record: Non-fatal — alleged sexual violence · Victim/survivor gender: Woman · Reported accused gender: Men (two alleged)
Evidence: Reported; police statement quoted in press · Justice: One suspect reportedly arrested; second sought when reported
Ogun State Police, as quoted by PUNCH and The Guardian, said a adult woman reported an alleged sexual assault involving two men. The incident reportedly occurred on 30 August, was reported on 1 September, and one man was arrested while police sought a second. Both stories trace central details to the same police account, so the two links do not independently establish the allegation. The survivor’s identity is withheld.
What remains uncertain: Archive by reported incident date (August), not the September reporting date. Do not publish the home address or details that could identify the survivor.

When: 1 September 2026 · Where: Ogungbade Village, Ogun · Record: Fatal — intimate partner · Victim/survivor gender: Woman · Reported accused gender: Man
Evidence: Reported; police sources quoted in press · Justice: Husband reportedly arrested; investigation ongoing when reported

What this register can and cannot show
The current records show two alleged husband-to-wife killings in Ogun reported less than 48 hours apart, a wife-to-husband killing in Abia, and two reported sexual-violence incidents in Ogun and Bauchi. These observations establish cases needing follow-up; they do not establish a national trend or comparative risk. The coverage is concentrated in three states: Abia, Bauchi and Ogun. Most of Nigeria has no case-level coverage in this initial release; that is a research gap, not evidence of safety elsewhere.
Policy follow-up: Request dated police and court updates on each investigation; confirm whether survivors received appropriate, confidential medical and psychosocial care; document the time from complaint to protective response; publish anonymized, state-level case-stage data; expand searches across states and local-language outlets before claiming a geographic pattern. These are questions and proposals arising from the case record, not findings that an agency failed in a specific case.
Nigeria context and existing trackers
Nigeria already has important GBV documentation, including the FAME Foundation Femicide Tracker and DOHS Cares Femicide Observatory. TUBUO Writes should cite and reconcile their case-level evidence when available rather than presenting itself as the first tracker.
The Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency’s five-year figures cover September 2021–July 2026 and multiple service categories. They describe agency workload, have a different time period and unit, and cannot be added to the August–September 2026 case-linked register. The 2015 Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act supplies national legislative text, while UN Women discusses state implementation. Verify the applicable local law and remedies before making claims about any of the three states in these records.
Methodology and safeguards
Scope. 1 August 2026 onward; Nigeria cases with a reported GBV or intimate-partner context supported by attributable public evidence. Fatal register: distinct people killed. Non-fatal register: distinct serious incidents, never survivor headcounts unless the incident unit is independently documented. A homicide involving a woman is not automatically femicide. Where the gender-related element is uncertain, hold the lead outside the principal GBV count.
Evidence. All five initial records are labelled Reported, including press accounts that quote police; none is called judicially verified. Follow the source link on each record. Shared reporting based on one police statement is a single source lineage. Compare aliases, date, location, relationship and suspect before adding a new case. Use a stable Nigeria-prefixed ID; record date, evidence category, prosecution stage and material corrections. A credible later reclassification may decrease the total.
Privacy. Withhold all names, images, exact addresses and unnecessary medical details of children and sexual-violence survivors, even if another publisher disclosed them. No graphic images or unsupported suspect photographs. Suspect identities are not republished here for non-fatal sexual-violence incidents. Questions or corrections: use the TUBUO Writes evidence form. Do not submit confidential details through a public comment.
Limits. This is a nonprobability, non-exhaustive public-source register. ‘Random sample’ would describe a sampling design this project has not performed. Higher published or official aggregate totals are not interchangeable with these individually linked records. Increases over time may reflect monitoring intensity or access to news, not an increase in underlying incidence.
Corrections and version history
Initial release · 12 September 2026: three fatal records and two non-fatal incident records; August and September archives reconcile with this overview. No earlier version of the Nigeria register exists. Material later changes to date, name, legal status, classification, duplicate status or monthly total will be logged here with the previous value, new value, reason, date and source.
