South African police said a ninth woman’s body was discovered in Dawn Park, Boksburg, on 17 September, after eight women’s bodies had been found across Ekurhuleni during the preceding two months. A multidisciplinary police team is investigating the deaths, and additional officers have been deployed in the area.

There is an important line this record should not cross: police have not established that all nine deaths were committed by the same person or form one connected series. Investigators are still working to establish the circumstances of each case and whether connections exist. Public concern is understandable. But describing a confirmed “serial killer” at this stage would turn suspicion into fact.

The stronger record is the more careful one: nine women have been found dead; investigators are examining the cases; responsibility and the relationship between them remain under investigation. This update is therefore recorded as context and an active investigation, not nine confirmed GBV cases in this register. Existing tracker totals remain unchanged unless individual cases meet the Observatory’s inclusion rules.

Thousands of people joined vigils and memorial events following the discovery of nine murdered women in Ekurhuleni. The victims were reported to be mostly women in their twenties and thirties. Investigators are still trying to determine whether the killings are connected.

That distinction remains important. Public discussion has repeatedly raised the possibility of a serial killer, but police have not established that one person committed all nine killings. The Observatory will not turn that possibility into a finding before investigators establish a connection.

Civil-society groups and political parties also picketed Kempton Park police station, pressing for a response on policing and resources. The development moves this record beyond the discovery of bodies to a question that can now be followed: whether heightened public attention produces identifiable investigative progress and accountability, or fades while the killings remain unresolved.

Ekurhuleni killings: three arrests provide the first concrete break in one case.

South African police have arrested three people — two women and one man — in connection with one of the nine killings of women under investigation in Ekurhuleni. The arrests are significant because they provide the first clear investigative development since the Observatory’s 19 September follow-up.

The development should nevertheless be recorded narrowly. The three suspects have been linked to one victim, not to all nine deaths. Police continue to investigate whether the wider group of killings is connected and have not established that a single perpetrator, or one group of perpetrators, is responsible.

Government has also expanded Operation Shanela in Ekurhuleni. Metro police are being incorporated into intensified enforcement operations alongside measures addressing illegal liquor and drug activity and unsafe public spaces. These measures are worth recording, but they should not be confused with resolution of the cases.

The more important development is the arrest of suspects in one killing. The Observatory will now follow whether charges are sustained, what evidence emerges in court, and whether investigators establish any credible connection between that case and the other deaths.

Ekurhuleni killings: two women charged; third person released.

The Observatory’s 21 September entry requires an update. Police initially arrested three people in connection with the killing of Jabulile Ntimba, but only two women — Fortunate Masilela and Tsakane Nester Msithini — have been charged. The man arrested with them was released without charge.

The two women appeared in Boksburg Magistrates’ Court and face charges of premeditated murder and defeating or obstructing the course of justice. Their bail hearing is scheduled for 1 October.

This does not establish a connection between Ntimba’s killing and the other eight deaths under investigation in Ekurhuleni. Police have still not established that the nine killings were committed by one person or group. The 21 September entry is retained as part of the chronology; this note records the subsequent charging decision.
