This 10-case distribution is a description of the indexed fatal records only. It does not estimate perpetrator or victim gender shares across South Africa. The four separately indexed non-fatal events include three female survivors with reported male suspects and one male survivor in a role-specific mixed-accused event: two women are alleged sexual actors and three men are co-accused in the kidnapping and ransom allegations. Accused gender follows the reporting, not an adjudication. The other two Moeka Vuma homicide victims are excluded pending evidence of a GBV link.

Soweto TV interviewed Mbele’s family about her death. Women for Change reports that she was stabbed at her boyfriend’s home in Protea Glen on 2 August. The broadcaster’s family interview and the advocacy post identify one victim and one alleged intimate-partner incident, not two cases.
Justice status: Arrest reported by advocacy group; charge or outcome not independently established. Source limits and disagreements: The date and alleged arrest come from the advocacy post; a public police docket or court outcome was not located. The account remains an allegation.

Police told IOL that a child was found dead in Free State on 9 August. They reported a suspect’s arrest on both murder and rape charges. Her death is one fatal record; the rape allegation is part of the same event and cannot also be counted as a non-fatal incident.
Justice status: A 29-year-old man arrested on murder and rape charges; no adjudication established. Source limits and disagreements: The child is unnamed here. The rape charge is an allegation, not a proved forensic or judicial finding. The exact time of death is unknown.

Police told local reporters that a man shot his girlfriend at their Matwabeng residence on 9 August and then died from a self-inflicted gunshot. The woman’s death is indexed. The man’s later death is not indexed as a separate GBV victim.
Justice status: Police murder and inquest investigations reported; alleged perpetrator died. Source limits and disagreements: Neither the victim’s name nor a previous complaint was established. This is a separate town and date from the Bohlokong shooting.

Police identified Kosani after she was found dead on 10 August following an alleged attack by her partner on 9 August. A police spokesperson described an appeal for an ambulance the evening before discovery. The suspect was arrested; the sources do not establish a conviction.
Justice status: 40-year-old boyfriend arrested on a murder charge; trial outcome not established. Source limits and disagreements: Reports of earlier domestic disputes are witness or police accounts, not documentation that authorities had received a prior complaint. Vryheid Herald reported that a woman was killed in Mondlo on 9 August and that a male partner was arrested. Its September court report identifies her as Thandazile Thwala and names accused Dumisani Eric Khumalo. The report describes a pending bail process, not a conviction. An alleged discovery of messages is an unproven account of circumstances and offers no justification for violence.
Justice status: Dumisani Eric Khumalo in custody; bail hearing postponed to 8 September; no verdict established. Source limits and disagreements: The first report withheld the victim’s name; the later named court report resolves the identifier. The accused denies the charge, and no hearing outcome after 4 September was confirmed.

Local reporter Ofentse Mkase covered the accused’s 21 August court appearance and reported police information dating the stabbing to 7 August; her body was found on 13 August. eNCA separately reported his arrest. Reports call the suspect the victim’s partner. Both publications describe the same Orlando East death, so this is one record.
Justice status: Simiso Phakathi appeared 21 August, denied bail; later outcome not established. Source limits and disagreements: Name spelling differs: Soweto Urban and SABC use “Jabulisile Josephina Tshabalala”; eNCA prints “Jabulisile Josefina Chabalala”. The suspect’s names also vary between sources. The named local court report supplies the display name, and variants remain discoverable; request a court or family spelling confirmation.

Police said a 22-year-old woman was fatally shot at her home in Bohlokong on Sunday 16 August. They alleged that her boyfriend fired the shot; he was later hospitalized with a gunshot wound. Police did not establish the reason for the shooting.
Justice status: Murder investigation; alleged perpetrator hospitalized, judicial outcome unknown. Source limits and disagreements: SABC calls the event a possible failed murder-suicide; police did not confirm that motive. The Matwabeng woman mentioned in the same stories is a distinct victim and record.

The South African Police Service reported finding Poswa dead in an outside room in Reitzpark on 17 August and arresting a 42-year-old man described as her boyfriend. It described her as 44 and said her next of kin supplied her identity.
Justice status: 42-year-old boyfriend arrested for alleged murder; later proceeding not established. The government news service relayed SAPS reporting that the girlfriend of a wanted man, her sister and her sister’s boyfriend were found dead together on Sunday 23 August. This entry counts the girlfriend once because the reported accused–victim relationship supports an intimate-partner classification. Police said the motive was still under investigation.
Justice status: Police manhunt for James Mohajane reported 27 August; result unknown. Source limits and disagreements: The sister and the sister’s male partner are two further homicide victims in the same event. Their GBV nexus is not established by this account, so they remain under classification review outside the fatal GBV count. None of the three victim names was established.

Police told a local reporter that a woman was assaulted and allegedly raped during a home robbery on 30 August. A later police account reported a suspect’s arrest on 9 September. These are one August incident and a September justice update, not two incidents.
Justice status: Suspect arrested 9 September, court appearance scheduled 11 September; outcome unknown. Source limits and disagreements: Her name and address are withheld. Police say the investigation is ongoing; an arrest and scheduled hearing are not a conviction. The person’s nationality adds nothing to the GBV classification and is omitted.

SABC interviewed Lukhele’s aunt and Mpumalanga police after her body was found in Bethal. It reported an alleged stabbing on Sunday night, 6 September. The family account suspects an intimate partner; a police spokesperson describes the man arrested as a “male friend” and says he subsequently died in custody, a separate matter being investigated by IPID.
Justice status: Police say male friend arrested and later died in custody; IPID investigating death; no conviction. Source limits and disagreements: The police description does not independently confirm the exact relationship or guilt. SABC also describes Bongani Mlambo’s distinct killing; no gender-related nexus is established for that homicide, so he is not a second indexed GBV case.

Steenberg police reported rescuing an adult male e-hailing driver after an alleged kidnapping, rape and ransom demand on 12 September. Two women were alleged to have committed the sexual assaults; three men were arrested with them in connection with the kidnapping and ransom allegation. Count one event, not five.
Justice: Five arrests; Wynberg Magistrate’s Court appearance reported for 14 September; charges and outcome require follow-up. Privacy: Survivor name, exact age, recovery location and vehicle details withheld.
What these records do and do not show
Observation: Nine August fatal records and the one early-September fatal record each involve an alleged male suspect and a female victim; most are reported current partner killings. One August record involves a child and alleged sexual violence. Limit: a 10-person, opportunistically found case list cannot demonstrate a national trend, local hot spot, change in underlying prevalence, or the effectiveness of institutions.
Accountability questions: Can police publish privacy-safe case-level status updates for fatal partner violence and serious child sexual offences? Which institutions recorded an earlier warning, if any, in each partner case? Can a local referral pathway be documented for children and surviving relatives? Which of these cases reach charge, trial and judgment, and how long does each stage take? The register does not answer these questions without new primary evidence.
Policy context and support
The Domestic Violence Act 116 of 1998, as amended sets a protection-order framework. The Department of Justice describes the GBVF National Strategic Plan and the 2021 GBV amendment acts and lists the 24-hour Gender-Based Violence Command Centre at 0800 428 428; emergency police referral is 10111. These are real support routes, not proof that a service was used in any indexed case.
The South African Medical Research Council femicide study released in 2024 provides population research for an earlier study period. The 2026 parliamentary inquiry into statutory rape provides accountability context for child sexual-violence reporting. Neither source can be recast as August or September 2026 incident totals or joined numerically to this case sample.
Excluded and classification-under-review leads
Moeka Vuma, August: SAPS reports that the indexed girlfriend’s sister and the sister’s male partner were killed in the same event. The police said the motive remained under investigation; without a substantiated gender nexus, these two deaths are disclosed here but excluded from the fatal-GBV count. Police account. Bethal, September: the other man mentioned in the SABC story, Bongani Mlambo, is a separate homicide without a demonstrated GBV nexus in that report. SABC report.
Wrong-month safeguards: A 11 September school story reports an alleged child assault in July 2026; it is a September news development about an out-of-period event and is not a September non-fatal incident in this start-from-August index. The Potchefstroom arrest and Mondlo bail hearing in September likewise remain on their August records. Similar court verdicts about older offences are not new deaths.

Four adult women were found in separate Kempton Park-area discoveries. Police noted similarities but said it was premature to conclude that the deaths were linked or involved one perpetrator. The July discovery is outside this register’s coverage. The in-period discoveries remain excluded because the available evidence does not establish an intimate-partner, sexual-violence or other gender-related nexus, actor identity or actor gender.

Ekurhuleni women’s-death investigation · classification unresolved · ZA-LEAD-2026-005
Record: Investigation-level lead · Reported period: approximately July–17 September 2026 · Region: Gauteng · Count status: excluded pending case-level classification.
By 17 September, police said nine women’s bodies had been found across Ekurhuleni over approximately two months and added the latest discovery to a multidisciplinary investigation. Some victims were reportedly found stripped or with signs of sexual violence, but police had not established that the deaths were linked, identified a common perpetrator or confirmed a motive. This investigation-level lead does not add nine fatal people to the GBV register. Existing dated leads ZA-LEAD-2026-001–004 remain separate. Any later inclusion requires case-level deduplication, a supported occurrence, death or discovery date, and evidence of a GBV nexus.
Justice and evidence status: A multidisciplinary investigation remains open. Police initially detained three people over one of the nine deaths. Two women were subsequently charged with premeditated murder and defeating or obstructing the course of justice; the detained man was released without charge. Their bail hearing was scheduled for 1 October. The charges concern one victim only and do not establish that the other eight deaths are linked. No common perpetrator, common motive or adjudicated GBV classification has been established for the wider investigation.
Privacy and denominator: Victim photographs, exact ages, children’s details, residential information and small discovery locations are withheld. The nine reported victims are women; actor gender remains unestablished in most cases. They remain outside the fatal denominator, so South Africa’s totals stay at 10 fatal people and 4 serious non-fatal events.

Methods, corrections and safeguarding
Scope and unit: Incident date on/after 1 August 2026 in South Africa. Count an identifiable GBV-linked fatal victim once, and a distinct serious non-fatal event once. Include alleged partner killings and credible reported child or adult sexual violence, with an explicit evidence status. No double count when a survivor later dies, when one incident generates later arrests, or when two outlets reproduce one police release.
Evidence: “Reported” means at least a traceable original police, local or newsroom report; it does not mean guilt proved. An official charge is an allegation until a court finding. Source descendants are not independent corroboration. Compare victim name variants, age, dates, town, relationship and accused before assigning a permanent ID. A date inferred from “Sunday” is labelled as such. Individual paragraphs link original material and state uncertainties.
Ethics: Withhold names and images of children and living sexual-violence survivors, precise homes, medical records and unnecessary details. No graphic images or copied portraits. Check source and republication rights before any future image use. Provide a private route for factual corrections via the TUBUO Writes evidence form; do not publish survivor documents in comments.
Inference limit: These cases are not randomly sampled, not close to comprehensive, and cannot support percentages of national perpetration or comparisons with Cameroon, Ghana or Nigeria. This is an incomplete, nonprobability public-source register. It cannot estimate national incidence, prevalence or perpetrator distributions and must not be used to rank countries. Preserve both the raw incident date and the report/update date.

Future substantive edits must record the date, stable case ID, old claim, new claim, supporting source and impact on month and cumulative totals. An exclusion or reclassification can lower a count. No case should remain “verified” after source evidence is withdrawn without review.
