Copperbelt police commissioner Rae Hamoonga said police were investigating a suspected murder after an altercation in Kapoto on 18 August. Preliminary postmortem information in the police account described a brain injury after a reported fall and impact to the head. Separate family-based coverage identified the deceased as Vainess Kanyama and described a dispute involving her husband’s alleged girlfriend. That relationship account does not settle intent or the legal cause of death.
Justice status: Police reportedly sought a woman in connection with the suspected murder as of 23 August; any arrest, charge or court outcome remains unverified.

The police account available without subscription does not independently establish the reported name or exact alleged blow. News Diggers reported a police statement from Southern Province commander Moono Namalongo: a child was admitted to Southern Province University Teaching Hospital after her mother reported suspected poisoning and sexual assault on 19 August. The alleged incident was placed on the evening of 18 August. Police were still investigating the allegations; the available report does not establish a forensic result or identify any accused person.
Justice status: Police investigation described in the 22 August report; suspect, charge and judicial outcome not verified.
Evidence and limits: Reported police investigation; sexual assault and poisoning alleged. The girl remains anonymous. Initial symptoms and clothing observations are part of a reported allegation, not independently confirmed proof of rape or poisoning; avoid repeating intrusive details.

ZNBC reported an alleged sexual assault on a adult woman on 29 August. According to Southern Province police commander Moono Namalongo, a man known to her allegedly threatened her with a knife and forced her into a classroom. The account says she told her mother afterwards. The same ZNBC story was republished by Zambia 24; those are one underlying source, not independent corroboration.
Justice status: Police reported apprehending the 31-year-old suspect on 30 August; no charge, trial or conviction was verified by 12 September.
Evidence and limits: Reported; police account attributed. The woman is not named and the school and other identifying details are withheld. The headline/story publication on 2 September does not make this a September incident.

A local Serenje media page says a wife killed her husband in Muchinka on 26 August and attributes confirmation to a provincial police officer. No directly accessible police statement or independent case report was found in this review. This is a potential woman-to-man intimate-partner killing, but it cannot responsibly change the fatal count or gender percentages on this evidence alone.

News Diggers quoted police saying the girl’s paternal uncle was detained for allegedly sexually abusing her over a period beginning in March and that she was pregnant. No individually dated August or September assault is established by the available extract. The first reporting date is not an incident date; preserve this important case as a follow-up lead without putting it into the September incidence count.

Diamond TV reported that Zulu was found dead at home and that police were seeking a male acquaintance who had reportedly visited her. A later Mwebantu report says that man died. Neither report establishes an intimate-partner relationship or a gender-related motive. Do not classify every woman’s homicide as GBV; retain this as an uncounted lead pending evidence.

Zambia Daily Mail reported a adult man arrested following an allegation of child sexual abuse in Mwinilunga. The publicly accessible excerpt did not establish the child’s age, gender, or the incident date. Do not infer those details from the accused or from a post date.

What the evidence can support
This small, uneven set documents one suspected partner-linked death, one police-investigated alleged sexual assault of a girl, and one alleged knife-threat sexual assault of a woman, with both dated non-fatal records in Southern Province. This is a finding about the records retrieved, not proof of geographic concentration, time trend, or national gender distribution. It cannot establish whether Zambia’s underlying GBV incidence rose or fell between months.
Questions for a Sunday policy brief: Did the Kitwe investigation establish cause, intent, final suspect identity and any judicial stage? Can the Southern Province police issue privacy-safe outcomes for the two Southern Province investigations? How will police disaggregate the three Luanshya girls’ allegation by distinct dated event without publishing identifying details? Will any official statement clarify the alleged Chitambo male victim? Which protection and referral services were offered in the cases where a report was made? These are investigation questions, not established institutional failures.
Policy context and practical support
The Anti-Gender-Based Violence Act (Act 1 of 2011) provides a legal framework for protection and gender-based violence proceedings. Zambia Police figures for April–June 2026, reported on 4 September describe 10,881 GBV cases and 39 murder cases in that earlier quarter; these administrative totals are a different dataset and are never added to this August–September individually indexed register. The earlier-quarter 73.8% female-victim share concerns reported victims across police GBV cases, not the sex of perpetrators and not this month’s homicide share.
For confidential support, LifeLine/Childline Zambia operates Childline 116 and the GBV line 933 (service account). In immediate danger, contact local emergency services or the nearest police station. The tracker does not know whether any indexed survivor accessed a helpline.
Methodology, dates and safeguards
Start date: 1 August 2026. Each GBV-related death is counted as one person. Each serious non-fatal assault is counted as one event, even when multiple people are affected; do not add fatal people to non-fatal events. Place a record in a month using an evidenced incident/death date; when no such month can be assigned, keep the record linked outside monthly figures. A publication, complaint, arrest, trial or sentencing date never becomes an incident date. Preserve one stable case ID and deduplicate syndicated versions of the same police statement.
Gender is recorded separately for victim/survivor and the reported actor, with “unknown” where necessary. Accusation and police suspicion are attributed, never treated as a conviction; a female homicide victim is not automatically a gender-related homicide. “Random” can mean this is an incomplete assortment in ordinary language, but there has been no random sampling and no national inference. Absence from a month is not evidence that no violence took place.
Children and living sexual-violence survivors remain unnamed; avoid photos, medical detail, exact addresses and repeated intrusive description. Every case record links the strongest available source and explains where evidence is incomplete. Send corrections through the evidence submission form without posting private details publicly.
Corrections and version history
Initial Zambia edition · 12 September 2026: August 1 fatal person, 2 serious non-fatal events; September through 12 September 0 dated fatal and 0 dated serious non-fatal events. Six linked leads are uncounted. No earlier Zambia edition is being revised.
Source dating decision: ZNBC published the Southern Province classroom allegation on 2 September but placed the incident on 29 August; this record belongs in August. The Southern Province report was published in September but alleges abuse starting in March and does not supply a discrete September incident date. The Eastern Province account spans 26 August–4 September, so its event month cannot yet be allocated. These decisions can be changed with dated new evidence and a public before/after correction.
Judicial update outside this period: The National Prosecution Authority reported three sentences on 28 August in the killing of Stella Mwanza; contemporary accounts place her death on 28 December 2025. This is an older-case court development, never an additional August 2026 fatality.
For later changes, show date, stable ID, previous and corrected claim, source, reason, and count effects for the affected month and cumulative period. Do not silently remove an accusation, duplicate, exoneration or misidentification.
