2 indexed fatal people · 4 indexed serious non-fatal events
Incident/death coverage: 1 August–12 September 2026. Research checked: 12 September 2026. These records form an incomplete, nonprobability collection of identifiable public-source cases. They are not a randomly sampled dataset or Zimbabwe’s national GBV totals. August may change when older incidents are discovered; September is in progress.

A fatal case counts a person who died; a non-fatal case counts a distinct event. Trial and publication dates do not create another incident. These columns have different units and are never added into an undifferentiated national number. “Zero indexed” would indicate an evidence gap, not an absence of violence.
Victim and reported actor gender
| Measure | Man reported → woman | Woman reported → man | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fatal persons | 1 / 2 · 50% | 1 / 2 · 50% | Both are intimate-partner killings in police/news reporting; no guilt inferred |
| Non-fatal events | 3 / 4 · 75% | 1 / 4 · 25% | Two court-reported convictions, one prosecution allegation and one physical-abuse allegation |
| Both units described separately | 4 source records | 2 source records | Do not combine a death and a non-fatal event into one prevalence estimate |
These are fractions of this six-record index only, not Zimbabwe-wide proportions of violence. Classification relies on published victim and reported actor genders; an excluded Gwanda death is kept outside the numerator and denominator while its defensive context remains unresolved. Known fatality, accusation, charge and conviction are separate fields.

Individual case histories
Portia Dzanwa, 36 · ZW-GBV-2026-001
Unit: One fatal person · Date: 16 August 2026 · Place: Hopley, Harare.
Victim/survivor gender: Woman · Reported actor: Man, her husband, suspected.
What is reported: Police accounts reviewed by ZimLive and NewsDay report that Sergeant Portia Dzanwa was shot and killed in a vehicle after confronting her husband about an allegation of sexual abuse concerning a child in their family. The reported intimate-partner relationship supports inclusion as one fatal GBV death. The child’s separate reported allegation has no established incident month and is not turned into another August event.
Justice stage: Her husband was reportedly arrested under guard after sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot injury; an initial account described a murder charge and a continuing police investigation. No conviction is established.
Evidence and limits: Police-reported killing; suspect allegation, no conviction. Police wording sometimes reverses her given name and family name as “Dzanwa Portia.” The child and any alleged abuse are described without identifying details. The suspect’s injury is not a separate GBV survivor event. Date basis: Sunday 16 August evening; death at scene, reported 17 August.

Bulawayo adult survivor · identity withheld · ZW-NF-2026-001
Unit: One serious non-fatal event · Date: 10 August 2026 · Place: Bulawayo, near Bulawayo.
Victim/survivor gender: Woman · Reported actor: Man, former husband, convicted.
What is reported: According to the National Prosecuting Authority account carried by Pindula, the woman’s former husband raped her on 10 August at a Bulawayo homestead. She reported the incident to police and was referred for medical examination. The case is indexed on the reported incident date in August, rather than the September publication date.
Justice stage: Bulawayo Regional Court convicted the man of rape and imposed an effective 15-year prison sentence, reported 2 September. Appeal status was not located.
Evidence and limits: Reported court conviction and sentence. The accessible report is Pindula’s rendering of an NPAZ account, not two independent confirmations. The survivor remains anonymous; avoid more precise residence information. Date basis: Date of rape supplied in NPAZ account published 2 September.

Mashonaland West adult survivor · identity withheld · ZW-NF-2026-002
Unit: One serious non-fatal event · Date: 26 August 2026 · Place: Mubaira, Mashonaland West, Mashonaland West.
Victim/survivor gender: Woman · Reported actor: Man, convicted.
What is reported: An account of proceedings at Chivhu Regional Magistrates’ Court gives 26 August as the date a adult woman was raped in the Mubaira area. A member of the public reportedly came to her aid and the allegation was reported to police. The September conviction story is linked back to the August incident rather than counted as a new September event.
Justice stage: Adult man convicted of rape and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment; appellate outcome unknown.
Evidence and limits: Reported court conviction and sentence. Pindula attributes this account to the National Prosecuting Authority. Its same story describes separate assaults on a child during July 2026; those July events are not part of this case or August count. Date basis: Court/NPAZ account says the assault occurred 26 August; story published 7 September.

Harare adult survivor · identity withheld · ZW-NF-2026-003
Unit: One serious non-fatal event · Date: 27 August 2026 · Place: Harare.
Victim/survivor gender: Woman · Reported actor: Man, stepfather, charged.
What is reported: 263Chat reports that a prosecutor alleged a adult woman was sexually assaulted by her stepfather on 27 August. The complainant reportedly disclosed the incident and a police report followed. This is one alleged non-fatal incident with an August event date; the accused person’s September court appearance is a justice update, not a second case.
Justice stage: Accused appeared before a Harare magistrate on a rape allegation and was granted bail, according to the 3 September court story; no adjudication is established.
Evidence and limits: Court-reported prosecution allegation; no conviction. Only a prosecution account was located; an allegation and bail are not a conviction. Publishing the accused’s name alongside a familial relationship risks identifying the adult survivor, so the site withholds his name and her specific family/household details. Date basis: Date given by state prosecutor in 263Chat court report published 3 September.

Martin Muduva · ZW-GBV-2026-002
Unit: One fatal person · Date: 9 September 2026 · Place: Dzivarasekwa Extension, Harare.
Victim/survivor gender: Man · Reported actor: Woman, his wife, suspected.
What is reported: ZimLive reports that Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission commissioner Martin Muduva sustained a fatal injury in a reported domestic attack by his wife on the evening of 8 September. He was taken to hospital and died on 9 September. The reported intimate-partner relationship is the basis for classifying his death in the fatal GBV ledger. His wife reportedly died shortly afterward from suspected self-poisoning; her death is documented here as context, not a second gender-related homicide.
Justice stage: Police reportedly investigated the deaths. The suspected assailant also died; no criminal conviction or final finding is reported.
Evidence and limits: Reported partner killing under investigation; no trial finding. Early reports draw on police and family accounts, and full forensic/judicial findings were not located. Reports speculating about a motive are not presented as fact. September is assigned by date of death, not a later burial report. Date basis: Reported attack late Tuesday 8 September; died Wednesday morning 9 September.

Harare adult survivor · identity withheld · ZW-NF-2026-004
Unit: One serious non-fatal event · Date: 9 September 2026 · Place: Harare.
Victim/survivor gender: Man · Reported actor: Woman, his wife, accused.
What is reported: H-Metro’s court account reports that the adult survivor suffered serious injuries in an alleged physical assault by his wife on 9 September and was taken to hospital. The source describes a domestic relationship and a court charge. This is an alleged non-fatal serious-violence event; neither his hospitalisation nor the subsequent court report changes its incident month.
Justice stage: the accused woman appeared before a Harare magistrate facing a physical-abuse charge and was reportedly remanded in custody. Later medical and court outcomes are unknown.
Evidence and limits: Court-reported physical-abuse allegation; no conviction. Both published accounts follow the same H-Metro court reporting and should not be treated as independent corroboration. Reported infidelity is contextual allegation, never an excuse or proven cause. Date basis: Court account places assault on Wednesday 9 September; reported 11 September.

Research leads outside the counts
These leads show why a published headline, charge or burial cannot automatically enter a country/month total. They are not counted and are not implied convictions.
Gwanda household killing · classification under review · ZW-LEAD-2026-001
Time: 11 August 2026 · Status: Fatal domestic incident, reported intervention/self-defence context unresolved
Court reporting says Harold Ngwenya died after wife Miriam Ndlovu intervened when he allegedly attacked her daughter with an axe. She was charged with murder; the available account raises an apparent defence-of-another issue but does not resolve it. Neither the partner’s death nor the daughter’s injury is assigned a male/female GBV perpetration category from this unresolved narrative. Revisit court findings and the GBV nexus before considering any count change.

Shamva child · identity withheld · ZW-LEAD-2026-002
Time: Report 9 August; alleged assaults over unspecified earlier dates · Status: Event month unknown; excluded from monthly non-fatal totals
Police reporting describes arrests in a child-sexual-abuse investigation in Shamva, but does not establish that an individual assault took place in August. Multiple suspects or charges must not be transformed into an invented August event count.

Kambuzuma woman · identity withheld · ZW-LEAD-2026-003
Time: Report 10 September; incident date not established · Status: Single-source allegation, event month unknown
A September report alleges sexual violence by a former partner but supplies no reliable date of the alleged event. Publication in September does not establish a September incident. Preserve only an anonymised lead pending stronger dating and corroboration.

Zimbabwean mother and daughters killed in the United Kingdom · ZW-LEAD-2026-004
Time: Deaths July 2026 in England; burial in Zimbabwe August 2026 · Status: Outside Zimbabwe jurisdiction and August period
Nothabo Zandile Tshuma and her daughters Natalie and Nala were killed in Bedfordshire, England, in July, then mourned and buried in Zimbabwe in August. Their Zimbabwean nationality and August burial do not move the incident to Zimbabwe or to August.

Bulawayo High Court rape appeal concerning a child · ZW-LEAD-2026-005
Time: Court report 9 August 2026; original offences in 2025 · Status: Older-case justice follow-up only
The High Court’s August 2026 review of a child’s rape conviction concerns alleged incidents during 2025. It illustrates why justice updates need links to their original event month, rather than an invented August 2026 incident.

What the evidence supports
The six indexed records show domestic and former-partner violence, sexual assault of women including an older woman, and a man seriously injured in a reported spousal assault. The two convicted non-fatal cases were dated in August but reported in September. That difference between event date and publication date materially changes a monthly table. This source set is too small and selective to establish a trend, a regional ranking or a national male-versus-female perpetration rate.
Policy follow-up questions: How do police and prosecutors record incident date separately from report/conviction date? Can agencies publish privacy-safe age and gender breakdowns for both victims and accused, with unknown categories? Are help referrals and protection-order applications documented after high-risk domestic reports? How do those applications proceed through arrest, trial, appeal and post-judgment support? The register does not assert answers that its sources cannot establish.
Policy and help
The Domestic Violence Act [Chapter 5:16] provides a legal framework for domestic-violence protection; check current application and any later amendments before advising on an individual remedy. Monitor the Zimbabwe Gender Commission and Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency for official policy or prevalence data, displayed as separate sources with their own periods and methods. Administrative totals cannot be added to this small individual-event ledger.

Methodology and survivor safeguards
The record starts 1 August 2026. Fatal deaths are counted by person and assigned by documented date of death; serious non-fatal incidents are counted by distinct event and assigned by incident date. One allegation involving several suspected offenders remains one event unless independently dated separate events are established. Arrest, hearing, sentencing, publication and burial remain justice or reporting updates. A victim’s death and an associated alleged child assault are not counted twice. Dedupe by identity, relationship, dates, locality and description.
Qualifying fatal cases require an evidenced intimate-partner, sexual-violence or other gender-related nexus; being a female or male homicide victim alone is insufficient. Evidence labels distinguish conviction, prosecution allegation and investigation. Cases with unknown month or uncertain GBV classification stay as linked leads, without a “pending audit” placeholder in the monthly table. “Random” is only colloquial shorthand for incomplete discovery, never a claim of probability sampling. Sourced gender fractions are descriptions of the displayed index only.
Living sexual-violence survivors and children are anonymous; do not reproduce their photographs, identities, precise homes, graphic allegations or medical identifiers. Withhold the name of an accused family member when naming him could expose a survivor. Reuse no images without identification and rights checks. Multiple outlets repeating one police or court briefing do not supply independent corroboration. Submit a correction through the evidence submission form without confidential survivor records in a public comment.
Corrections and version history
First Zimbabwe edition · 12 September 2026: August 1 fatal person / 3 serious non-fatal events; September through 12 September 1 fatal person / 1 serious non-fatal event. Cumulative 2 fatal people / 4 non-fatal events. Five excluded or undated research leads are visible; no earlier Zimbabwe edition is overwritten.
Date decision: the Bulawayo and Mashonaland West rape convictions were reported in September but concern August events. The Tshuma family deaths occurred in England in July; August burial in Bulawayo is not a Zimbabwe/August event. An August appellate report concerns 2025 abuse.
Classification decision: Gwanda court reporting describes a killing during an alleged intervention against assault of a daughter. The legal and gender-related classification is unresolved; it remains a visible uncounted lead rather than silently altering the male/female share. The alleged prior abuse of a child in the Dzanwa case also has no dated event and is not assigned an August non-fatal count.
Future corrections must state date, permanent ID, previous and revised fact, supporting sources, and resulting changes to the original and cumulative month totals. Retain the same ID for a case and attach later court outcomes to it.
